Comparing the 1994 Jeep Cherokee to the 2014 Jeep Cherokee

At the cusp of our name change, the new Jeep Cherokee has arrived and a 1994 Jeep Cherokee has been traded. This presents an awesome opportunity to compare the two vehicles.

BODY: You can see a significant difference in the style although the design is rather similar; both accommodate 4 passengers (and of course the driver).

JEEP GRILL: much more prominent on the newer model, possibly due to the years of building the brand.

HEADLIGHTS: Much more sleek. You can tell appearance is much more of a concern now than it was 20 years ago with the chrome trim and the attention to detail.

ENGINE: In the 1994 Cherokee engine much more of the "guts" are exposed. In 20 years there has been simplification and organization of the engine.

DASHBOARD: From 1994 to 2014 there have been many advancements to the dash from digital speedometers, to touchscreens to MP3 integration to heated steering and steering wheel controls.

DOORS: The new doors have more storage space and more dimension. This 1994  Jeep Cherokee had electric windows and door locks so they are similar in that regard.

BACKSEAT: The 1994 Jeep Cherokee pictured has cloth seats. It also came with a full-size tire, which is not included on this Jeep Cherokee, but is also available. The leather seats are much more contoured and have more options for seating and folding down.

BACK EXTERIOR: More interior room is created with the rounding of the back door. Both Cherokees have a back windshield wiper. The 1994 Cherokee has a hitch. The 2014 Jeep Cherokee pictured does not have the trailer tow package, but it is available.

Comparing Hard Top and Soft Top Jeep Wranglers

 Soft Top ($26,650)

or

Hard Top ($30,345)?

Check out these two Jeeps with very similar features. Find out what you get for the price.

The wrangler with the hard top also comes with a remote entry key, with lock, unlock and panic. The soft top Wrangler comes with a manual key.

Check out this 6 second video of how the key works:

They have the same manual hood release
They have the same V6 Engine

They have the same dual shifters

The Hard top Wrangler also has automatic windows and door locks. The Soft Top Wrangler has manual locks and windows (which some drivers prefer)

Both Jeeps have AM/FM Radio and CD Player
And Air Conditioning
They both have steering wheel radio controls
Both Jeeps have plenty of storage space

They both have cloth seats

Both Jeeps have protected headlights, heavy duty Wrangler tires, a full-size extra tire, and a central breaklight. The soft top does not have an back windshield wiper or tinted windows; the hard top has both.
The Interior space is exactly the same but the hard top and the soft top are connected differently. Some Jeeps that come with a hard top also come with the soft top. Some hard top models have a section that can be folded back. Some hard tops have to be taken off and left behind. The soft top can be folded back so it is always on board.

The interior of the hard top is white. It's structure leaves the windows wide open.
The Interior of the soft top is black. There is a support beam that crosses in front of the backseat passenger windows.

Do I really need this service?

Do I have to buy the part? When should I pay for the service?

If you use your car to get back and forth, you might not enjoy needing to buy a part or pay for additional service but getting your car maintained should not be a negative thing...

My car is a 2011. Usually all I need is an oil change (I use synthetic, so I can go a little longer between changes). This time around, I needed two filters for my car that totaled about $100.

Although this was not really how I wanted to spend the money, I knew that purchasing the parts would extend the life of my vehicle (I pretty much live in my car), so I was happy to make the investment. I listened to what the service adviser had to say and then I made sure to put aside the funds. I do not always get the part they recommend during that same visit, but the next visit, I work it into the budget.

It is a good idea to go back to the same service provider because they keep a history of your vehicle's maintenance. You can try to keep your own records, but you might misplace the paper work. I keep my records in my glove box, but sometimes it's hard to find the exact record I need, but your service center should have your service details readily available. We keep details records of your vehicles service for over 2 years. After two years, we keep a general record of service visits.

Another benefit of using one service center is knowing early what work you need on your vehicle. If you go to a quick lube every time you need an oil change something else could be wrong with your car that you do not know about, but if you are getting regular service, your adviser can tell you what is "on the horizon." My service adviser told me about the filters the last time I went to get an oil change, but I needed to budget the service in to my expenses, so the next time I needed an oil change, I requested the filter replacements. The service was not past due, so I was able to wait until the next appointment.

Choosing a dealership might be more costly, but it's worth the piece of mind, here's why: if you go to a "non-OEM" service center and the technicians damage your vehicle, you have no where else to go, but, if you get your vehicle repaired at the dealership, you can keep going up the chain until you get your vehicle repaired the right way.

Once you choose to a service center you can be put on their mailing list for coupons and promotions. I was able to get $10 off my service because I went to the website and found their coupon online

I am very thankful for my car, so keeping it maintained isn't "dreadful." Last winter I thought I should check into getting new tires. My service adviser told me I had two tires that were getting close to needing to be replaced and a third that would last a little longer. (the fourth had been replaced under warranty, so it was still brand new). I started to put the money aside. New tires might not be what you really want to buy, but wouldn't you rather buy new tires than get in an accident?

This tire is showing signs of wear. The tread is gone in some areas. It also has started peeling.

A new tire has defined tread and no ripping or tearing.

I purchased my car brand new. When I purchased my tires I had 65,000 miles on my car so those tires did a great job for 65,000 miles! Even though tires can be expensive, you are putting a lot on them, so having good tires should be a happy purchase.

If you are anything like me, you NEED your car, so investing in its maintenance will keep it working for you.

I purchased a car in 2002 and told my sons they had better take care of it because they would be driving it someday. My 16 old drives that car now (it does smell kind of funny), but it runs fine because I made sure it had it's regular maintenance.

Plants at the Office

A shout out to Oberer's Flowers!

Oberer's Flowers in Dayton

Thanks to Joy for taking time to visit the dealership and bring us our new plant. It's called a Bromeliad. I went to Oberer's to meet Joy, one of the sales managers, and learned about the plant.

The Bromeliad will grow for about 6 months if it is cared for well. It does not need much light so it does well in an office setting. As long as it has water in it's crown it will thrive. (See video)

The crown is the area around the stem where the leaves grow. There are little pockets where water can sit until it is needed inside the plant. Under watering is better than over watering for a Bromeliad.

This video shows how to water the Bromeliad. If you poor water directly over the plant, the water water will catch in the pockets and slowly cascade down the plants the pockets fill.

There are many good reasons to add plants to your office area:

1. Plants boost productivity and help everyone stay on task by reducing the excess CO2 in the air
2. Plants absorb toxins created by appliances & supplies that cause headaches & respiratory problems
3. Plants improve humidity to decrease the chance of the flu and colds
4. Plants reduce stress levels
5. Plants add beauty to office space that might otherwise be very plain

Here is a nice article about why having plants around an office is recommended and what kinds of plants are the most beneficial to office environments.

Dodge Challenger 1974 to 2011

1974 Dodge Challenger Headlight with Challenger Insignia

1974 was the last Year the Dodge Challenger was built until 2008 when the new challenger was designed to it's liking (that's called retrofitting)

The 1974 Challenger had the option of a vinyl roof.

Although you can customize the new Challenger with a vinyl roof, it was not added to any of the new models from the factory. The new model also has much less chrome.

The light under the grill is a fog light, which is a new addition since the 1974 design. The original Challenger had a blinker light there.

The headlight and blinker sit deeper into the the grill now than they did on the original design.

The original design had the blinker under the high and low beam headlights

1974 Dodge Challenger Tire was a radial 15' or 16'

Freon Changes on the Horizon

During a recent conversation with one of our parts experts, we got on the topic of Freon. The last change took place in the 90's, but we found some articles that suggest that a new mixture of Freon will take the place of what we have now:134R. The new formula will very likely be in all 2014 vehicles. It is called R1234YF.

When a new formula is introduced, the old formula gets phased out rather quickly. Owners of vehicles with the previous formula must purchase a "retro kit" to be able to use the new formula rather than continuing to buy the older version.

Dupont created this new formula" to reduce emissions." "If all cars use this freon the effect would be equivalent to using 2.3 to 4.9 billion fewer liters of fuel or driving 24 to 52 billion fewer kilometers. (This is equivalent to using 600 million to 1.3 billion fewer gallons of fuel or driving 15 to 32 billion fewer miles.)" (See article at Dupont's Website

So, what's the catch? While the current formula (134R) is $19.95/lb, R1234YF will be substantially more expensive, potentially $50-70/lb. Is the reduction of emissions going to justify the cost?

When a vehicle is brought into the service center for a coolant check, we use a large machine to gauge how much freon is left. When I went out to the garage to get a photo of this machine, I found the one pictured on the left...

This confirms that the R1234YF formula will be taking the place of 134R in the near future. We will update the blog as we get more information about the new freon.
